When starting your journey towards achieving your goals, you’ll discover that there are many pieces of the puzzle that fit together in order to give yourself the best chance of success. You create your vision, develop your strategies and pave out the path that will move you closer to reaching them. Success should be inevitable now that all of the above has been put into place right? Not always. Despite the plan being set out perfectly, the biggest obstacle that sometimes stands in the way is our own inability to take action.
Unaccountable people make excuses, put things off and never achieve their goals. They also fail to acknowledge that the cause of their inaction is themselves. Sometimes we need that extra push, someone in cheering in our corner, and where necessary to hold our hand when the going gets tough; someone that we can stay accountable to for all the things we have set out to achieve.
An accountability buddy is a fabulous way of keeping you committed and completely responsible for the actions you mapped out towards achieving your goals. It is always easy to do something when your motivation and enthusiasm are high, but the clincher are the actions, behaviours and decisions that we make when these begin to wane (which they inevitably will). An accountability buddy can provide you with the support, motivation, mentoring and encouragement that you need in order to keep going.
Choose someone who has excelled in the area that you wish to excel in; you can look to them for their wisdom and share ideas about how to move forward. You don’t necessarily need to have just one buddy for all things; generally we have a couple of things that we want to achieve, so it makes sense to be accountable to a couple of people who possess the qualities that you admire in the area that you are setting goals in.
- If you admire the way that someone approaches their training, as to be accountable to them for your training goals.
- If you are working on improving your outlook on life and know someone who has a very positive mindset, be accountable to them for improving your own
- If you would like to be more accountable for your nutrition, work with someone who is knowledgeable and sets a good example of eating well
The most important thing about an accountability buddy is that you can trust them to understand you and what you’re trying to achieve, you can be completely honest with them if you are struggling and that they WILL hold you accountable to all the things that you have committed to doing.
I am lucky enough to have more than one person to whom I am accountable to
I have accountability buddies for expressing gratitude, utilising the tools I’ve been given to improve my mindset, and one extremely diligent buddy who ensures that I complete ALL of my weekly tasks – writing this blog being one of them (tick tick)
But I strongly believe that the most important person that I am accountable to is myself; there is no one on this earth who will be more excited when I achieve my goals, or more disappointed when I don’t.
I am accountable to myself first…and I couldn’t think of anyone more worthy and deserving to be accountable to – written by Danielle Fancellu, Wellness Coach
